Lower and wider with a more sculpted nose and a distinctive kink in the rear side window; the Touring trim introduced a power tailgate. LX and EX trims run 16-inch wheels on 235/65R16, Touring 17s. Touring models got cylinder deactivation on the V6.

Fifth generation (RL6)
The beltline kink is gone, replaced by a cleaner flank and a chrome bar across the nose; the second row gained Magic Slide seats that move sideways. EX and EX-L run 18-inch wheels on 235/60R18 while Touring and Elite get 19s on 235/55R19. The 2021 facelift revised the grille and dropped the lowest LX trim from some markets.

The Odyssey has been the minivan reviewers recommend to people who care about driving, praised for its V6 pace, body control, steering and the amount of thought in the seating and storage. Criticism has focused on the lack of an all-wheel-drive option, which the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna both offer, on fuel economy that has fallen behind the hybrid Sienna, and on second-row seats that slide and recline but do not stow in the floor the way Chrysler's do. Transmission behavior on some 2014-2017 cars and infotainment complaints on the 2018 redesign also came up repeatedly. The overall verdict has stayed positive for three decades.
The Honda Odyssey is an oldie but a goodie, blending V-6 power with a well-balanced chassis and a thoughtfully designed interior.

Was it a success?
A commercial success and the volume leader in its segment for much of the 2000s, and still one of two vans that dominate US minivan sales. Resale is strong, which makes used ones less of a bargain than the segment's reputation suggests. The V6 and chassis have a good record; automatic transmission trouble on some 1999-2004 cars, and power sliding door and rear brake issues more broadly, are the known weak points.
