Michelin is the French company most tire engineers measure themselves against. Founded in Clermont-Ferrand in 1889 by the brothers Edouard and Andre Michelin, it invented the radial tire in 1946 and has spent the decades since refining it. In the US, Michelin builds a large share of its passenger and light-truck tires at plants in South Carolina, Alabama and Indiana, so many of the tires on the shelf are made in America.
The brand's reputation rests on two things: tread life that usually matches or beats the warranty, and wet braking that stays strong as the tire wears. Its touring tires (Defender2, Primacy Tour A/S) and the CrossClimate2 all-weather tire are the safe default for family cars and crossovers, while the Pilot Sport line is a favorite among enthusiasts.
Michelin prices at the top of the market and rarely discounts hard, though seasonal rebates of 50 to 100 dollars per set are common. Warranties are straightforward: mileage coverage up to 80,000 miles on touring lines, a 60-day satisfaction guarantee, and three years of flat-tire changing assistance. If you drive a lot and keep your car for years, the cost per mile is often lower than a cheaper tire.

Made in the US at: Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Dothan, Alabama; Woodburn, Indiana; Norwood, North Carolina; Greenville, South Carolina; Lexington, South Carolina; Starr, South Carolina; Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Michelin has manufactured in the United States since the mid-1970s and runs its North American business from Greenville, South Carolina, with about 23,500 employees and more than 30 production sites in the US and Canada. It builds tires in South Carolina (Greenville, Lexington, Starr, Spartanburg), Alabama (Tuscaloosa and Dothan), Indiana (Woodburn) and North Carolina (Norwood, aircraft tires); tire production at Ardmore, Oklahoma ended in October 2025, leaving only rubber mixing there. Michelin sells through independent dealers and the large national chains and online retailers, including Discount Tire, Tire Rack, Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart and Belle Tire.
All financial and workforce figures are Michelin group-level (Compagnie Generale des Etablissements Michelin), not brand-level. Latest published full-year figures are for 2025: sales EUR 25,992 million and segment operating income EUR 2,719 million (10.5% of sales at current exchange rates; Michelin also quotes 10.9% at constant exchange rates), 122,600 employees on payroll at 31 Dec 2025 (115,800 full-time equivalents). Euro amounts converted at EUR 1 = 1.13 USD, the 2025 calendar-year average. The tire-plant count (67) and the 200-million-tires production figure come from Michelin's own corporate boilerplate and refer to 2022; several sites have closed since (Cholet and Vannes in France, Queretaro in Mexico, Guarulhos in Brazil, and tire production at Ardmore, Oklahoma ended in October 2025), so the current count is lower. Market share and global rank are from Tire Business' Global Tire Report ranking published in 2025 and based on 2024 tire sales. Tire production in tonnes is not published.

Where are Michelin tires made?
Michelin builds most tires sold in the US at its own plants in South Carolina (Greenville, Lexington, Spartanburg), Alabama (Dothan, Tuscaloosa) and Indiana. Some sizes come from Canada, Mexico or Europe. The country of origin is molded on the sidewall, so you can check before you buy.
Are Michelin tires worth the money?
For most drivers who put 12,000 or more miles a year on a car, yes. Independent tread-life tests and owner surveys consistently show Michelin touring tires lasting longer than cheaper rivals, which lowers the cost per mile. If you drive very little or plan to sell the car soon, a good mid-tier tire is the smarter buy.
