About the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The Silverado 1500 is Chevrolet's half-ton, full-size pickup and the F-150's closest rival in volume. It shares its chassis, engines and most hard points with the GMC Sierra 1500. Buyers arrive here with anything from a 17-inch steel-wheeled Work Truck to a 22-inch High Country, so the tire answer depends entirely on trim.

Reviewers have consistently rated the Silverado highly on chassis and powertrain and lower on cabin quality. The small-block V8s, the 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six diesel and the truck's composed handling get most of the praise, while the 2019 interior was singled out as a step behind Ram and Ford in materials before the 2022 refresh addressed it. Towing and payload figures are competitive, and the multi-position tailgate and available carbon-fiber bed have been treated as genuinely useful rather than gimmicks. The most common complaint in road tests is a busy unladen ride on the stiffer off-road packages.

While not the most up-to-date of the domestic pickups, the Silverado is plenty capable across a wide range of configurations.

A durable commercial success that has held second place in the US pickup market for a quarter of a century without ever quite catching the F-Series. Resale on crew-cab 4x4 V8 trucks is strong, and the 5.3 and 6.2 V8s have a good long-term record apart from lifter and cylinder-deactivation oil-consumption issues on certain years. The 8-speed automatic in 2015-2018 trucks and early 2019 interior quality are the two things used buyers look out for. Parts, service and tire fitments are available everywhere.

Tire options on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Work Truck and LS trims run 255/70R17 or 245/75R17, LT and RST use 265/65R18, and the popular 20-inch fitment is 275/55R20 up to 2018 and 275/60R20 from 2019. High Country wears 285/45R22 on 2014-2018 trucks and 275/50R22 from 2019, both of them low-profile sizes that ride hard on broken pavement. Trail Boss and ZR2 come on 275/65R18 and 275/70R18 all-terrains respectively, which is why many owners of 18-inch LT trucks simply fit the off-road size to gain ground clearance without a lift. Nothing is staggered and there are no factory run-flats; OE tires are usually Goodyear Wrangler or Michelin all-seasons, with Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrains on the off-road trims. If you tow at or near rating, keep the OE load index and consider an LT load range E tire; 18-inch winter fitments are plentiful while 22-inch winters are both scarce and expensive.
