About the Volkswagen Jetta GLI
The Jetta GLI is the performance version of Volkswagen's compact sedan, effectively a Golf GTI with a trunk. It has used the same turbocharged engines and much of the same chassis hardware as the GTI for four generations, with a limited-slip differential and larger brakes on recent cars. Tire buyers land here because the GLI runs wider and lower-profile tires than any ordinary Jetta, up to 225/45R18 on the current car.
Launched in 1984. Launched in 1984, the GLI badge arrived on the first-generation Jetta as the sedan counterpart to the Golf GTI, using the same fuel-injected engine and sport suspension in a three-box body.

Rounded body with a small grille, and for the GLI a 1.8-liter turbo or the 2.8-liter VR6. Identify it by the red-outlined badge, the deeper front bumper and 16-inch BBS-style wheels running 205/50R16 tires. Interior has the blue-and-red instrument lighting the Mk4 is known for.

2006-2014
A5 and early A6
Larger, squarer body with a full-width chrome grille bar. The GLI adopted the 2.0-liter TSI turbo and, on the A5, a honeycomb grille and dual exhaust. Standard fitment moved to 17-inch wheels with 225/40R17 tires, a much shorter sidewall than the Mk4's.

2012-2018
A6 (Mk6)
A more conservative, upright body built to a lower cost, but the GLI kept the GTI's engine, an independent rear suspension that the base Jetta lost, and larger brakes. Look for the black honeycomb grille and red trim strip. Standard tires are 225/45R17.

Revealed at the 2019 Chicago show on the MQB platform, with the GTI's 228-hp engine, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and adaptive dampers. Identify it by the honeycomb lower grille, red brake calipers and 18-inch wheels running 225/45R18 tires.

What the press said
The GLI has always been reviewed as the sensible enthusiast's alternative to the GTI, and reviewers have consistently pointed out that it costs less while offering the same power and a bigger trunk. The 2019 car drew the strongest reviews of the run, with the limited-slip differential, the six-speed manual and a tested zero to 60 mph time of 5.6 seconds all praised, and the criticism aimed at hard interior plastics and a cabin that looks cheaper than the driving experience deserves. The standing complaint across generations is that VW markets the GTI and neglects the GLI.
The GLI's responses are sharper, too, thanks to a lowered suspension and upgraded brakes.

Was it a success?
The GLI is a niche within a shrinking segment, and Volkswagen has kept it alive largely to give the Jetta an enthusiast halo. Resale is better than a base Jetta's but below a GTI's, which makes a used GLI one of the cheaper ways into a well-sorted front-drive performance car. Reliability tracks the GTI: the EA888 2.0-liter engine is durable if the oil is changed on time, with water pump, carbon buildup on earlier direct-injection versions and DSG service the known maintenance items.

Tire options on the Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Sizes step up through the generations: 205/50R16 on the Mk4, 225/40R17 on the A5 and early A6, 225/45R17 on the Mk6 and 225/45R18 on the current car. Nothing is staggered and no GLI has used run-flats, so all four tires match and rotation is normal. Original equipment on recent cars has been the Bridgestone Potenza S001 and Hankook Ventus summer or ultra-high-performance all-season rubber, and on cars fitted with summer tires from the factory a winter set is not optional in snow. Because the GLI has a limited-slip differential, mismatched tread depths across the front axle are more noticeable here than on a standard Jetta, so replace in pairs at minimum. The usual winter setup is a 17-inch wheel with 225/45R17, which is cheaper than 18-inch winter tires and gives more sidewall. Upsizing beyond 18 inches gains nothing and tends to make the ride unpleasant on the stiff GLI suspension.
