About the Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is Toyota's compact crossover and has been the best-selling non-pickup vehicle in the United States for most of the past decade. It is a front-drive-based five-seater with optional all-wheel drive, sold in gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid form. Tire shoppers land here in enormous volume, with three wheel diameters across the trim range from a 17-inch LE to a 19-inch Limited.

Launched in 1996. Launched in the US for 1996, the RAV4 was one of the first car-based compact SUVs sold in America, arriving as a short three-door and a five-door on Camry and Corolla underpinnings rather than a truck frame.

What the press said

The RAV4 gets reviewed as a sensible default rather than a favorite. Praise goes to the hybrid's real-world fuel economy, the cargo space, the standard safety equipment and the resale values, and the 2019 redesign was welcomed for adding some visual character to a previously anonymous vehicle. Criticism is consistent: hard interior plastics, a noisy engine under load in the standard hybrid, and handling that several outlets have described as clearly behind the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V. The Prime plug-in hybrid has been the best-received version, mostly because it is genuinely quick.

The hybrid-only RAV4 is a competitive compact SUV with good fuel economy, but it has a ways to go to catch up to our favorites.

Was it a success?

An extraordinary commercial success, and by volume the most important vehicle Toyota sells anywhere. Resale is class-leading, particularly on hybrid and Prime models, which for several years sold above list price used. Reliability reputation is very strong, with the main documented issues being fuel tanks on 2019-2020 hybrids that would not fill completely and some transmission shift-quality complaints on the 2019 eight-speed gasoline models. Tires are cheap and stocked everywhere in 225/65R17 and 225/60R18; 235/55R19 costs noticeably more.

Tire options on the Toyota RAV4

LE trims run 225/65R17, XLE and XLE Premium use 225/60R18 and Adventure, Limited and TRD Off-Road sit on 235/55R19 or 225/60R18 all-terrains depending on the package. Nothing is staggered and no RAV4 uses factory run-flats; OE fitments are usually Michelin Primacy, Bridgestone Ecopia, Dunlop Grandtrek or Toyo Open Country, with Falken Wildpeak all-terrains on the TRD Off-Road. Winter tire availability is excellent in 225/65R17 and good in 225/60R18, and thinner in 235/55R19, which is why owners of 19-inch Limiteds often buy a set of 17-inch wheels for the cold months. Towing is limited to 1,750 pounds on most trims and 3,500 on some hybrids, so the OE load index is sufficient, but if you fit a roof box and load the car heavily, avoid dropping to a lower load index than the door-jamb sticker calls for.
