The Prius is Toyota's hybrid hatchback and the car that made hybrids mainstream. It has been sold in the US since 2000 and was for two decades the default choice for buyers whose first priority was fuel economy. 2016-2022
XW50
First shown in Las Vegas in September 2015, this is the most divisively styled Prius, with slit-like tail lamps that run down the rear corners and a low, wide nose. Built on the TNGA platform with a double-wishbone rear suspension. Standard tires are 195/65R15, with 205/50R17 on Prius Prime 17-inch wheels.
What the press said
The 2004 XW20 was praised as a genuine technical achievement and a usable family car, and it won several car of the year awards. The 2010 XW30 drew criticism for a numb driving experience and a hard ride even as economy improved. The 2016 XW50 split reviewers sharply on styling, but the chassis was widely judged the best of any Prius to that point, with real improvements in body control. Across all generations the consistent criticisms are engine noise under load, unremarkable brake feel from the regenerative system, and interiors built to a price.
The current model is all around excellent, compromising little in its pursuit of efficiency.

Was it a success?
The Prius is one of the most commercially and technically successful cars of the last thirty years, even though its US volume has fallen as hybrid versions of ordinary Toyotas took over its job. Resale is strong, helped by a reputation for lasting far past 200,000 miles. Reliability is the model's defining strength: the hybrid transaxle and battery have proven durable, with the main age-related costs being hybrid battery replacement on the oldest cars and, on the 2010-2015 generation, excessive oil consumption on some engines.

Nothing is staggered and no Prius uses run-flats. Original equipment is always a low-rolling-resistance tire, typically a Bridgestone Ecopia or Yokohama Avid, and this is the one car where fitting a grippier replacement has a clearly measurable cost, usually two to four miles per gallon. Buyers who care about economy should look for a tire with a low rolling-resistance rating and accept modest wet grip; those who find the OE tires too slippery in rain will trade some range for a mainstream touring tire.
