The Mazda6 was Mazda's mid-size sedan in America from 2003 until 2021, the car most reviewers named as the one to buy if you cared how a family sedan drove. It came only with front-wheel drive and four-cylinder engines in its final form, and it wore ordinary sizes except for the 19-inch wheels on top trims. Owners often come here after finding out that 225/45R19 is a good deal more expensive than the 17-inch size.

The Mazda6 has been one of the best-reviewed family sedans of the century. The first generation made Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2003 and finished second for European Car of the Year, and reviewers praised the steering, the suspension tuning and the styling while noting that it was smaller inside than American rivals and that even the V6 lagged on straight-line pace. The 2014-2021 car was praised for looking and feeling more expensive than it was, and criticized for a turbo engine that made torque without charisma and for the lack of a hybrid.

Was it a success?

Commercially the Mazda6 never matched the Camry or Accord and Mazda eventually withdrew it from North America to concentrate on crossovers. That gap between reviews and sales is why used examples are good value: the cars are well regarded, plentiful and cheap. Reliability reputation is good, with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine and six-speed automatic among the more durable combinations in the segment, though rust on early cars and infotainment quirks on later ones come up regularly.
