About the Jeep Wrangler JL
The JL is the fourth-generation Jeep Wrangler, sold from the 2018 model year, and it is one of the few new vehicles where buyers regularly change the tire size before the first oil change. Factory fitments run from 32-inch tires on a Sport up to 35s on the Xtreme Recon package, with two-door and four-door bodies, a solid axle at each end and a full-size matching spare on the tailgate. Anyone shopping tires for one needs to decide first whether they are staying stock or going bigger.
Launched in 2018. Launched for 2018 after being unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2017, the JL replaced the decade-old JK with a lighter aluminum-intensive body, an eight-speed automatic, a turbocharged four-cylinder option and a windshield that folds with four bolts instead of dozens.

Keeps the seven-slot grille and round headlights but the grille slots now lean back at the top and the turn signals moved onto the front fenders, which is the quickest way to tell a JL from a JK. The windshield is more raked, the door hinges and hood are aluminum, and the tail lights are squarer. Sport trims run 32-inch tires on 17-inch wheels, Rubicons 33s, and the Xtreme Recon package fits 35s from the factory.

What the press said
Reviewers have been clear that the JL is the best Wrangler ever built and still a compromised road car. Praise goes to the off-road ability, the improved interior and infotainment, the eight-speed automatic and the fact that Jeep modernized the vehicle without ruining what it is. Criticism is aimed at wandering steering on the highway, wind and road noise, fuel economy and a soft-top mechanism that testers found fiddly. The 4xe plug-in hybrid was praised for its torque and criticized for weight and for a modest electric range, and the V8-powered Rubicon 392 was treated as gloriously unnecessary.
The Wrangler remains the quintessential Jeep: unapologetically brutish, great at off-roading but borderline unwieldy on the street.

Jeep reports Wrangler sales as one nameplate rather than by generation, and the JL era opened with a record 240,032 US sales in 2018 before settling between roughly 150,000 and 205,000 a year.
Was it a success?
A commercial success that set the Wrangler's all-time US sales record in its first full year, and a vehicle with resale values that embarrass the rest of the industry. A three-year-old Rubicon routinely sells for close to what it cost new. Reliability is mid-pack: the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is well understood, but death wobble complaints, electrical gremlins and leaks around the removable roof panels are all part of the ownership conversation.

Tire options on the Jeep Wrangler JL
Factory sizes are 245/75R17 or 255/75R17 on Sport and Sahara, roughly a 32-inch tire, and 285/70R17 on the Rubicon, a 33-inch tire supplied on LT-construction BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2s; the Xtreme Recon package steps up to a 35-inch tire on 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels. Nothing on a Wrangler uses run-flats and nothing is staggered, and every trim carries a full-size matching spare, so a set is five tires rather than four. Upsizing is close to universal in this market: 33s usually fit a stock Rubicon, 35s need a small lift and rub at full lock without one, and 37s require a lift, re-gearing and often a longer driveshaft, with the speedometer recalibrated either way. Load range matters more than it looks: LT tires in load range C or E are stiffer and better suited to trail air-down and to carrying a loaded Wrangler than a P-metric tire in the same size.
