About the GMC Sierra 2500HD
The Sierra 2500HD is GMC's three-quarter-ton pickup, mechanically the same truck as the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD but trimmed and priced higher, with Denali and AT4 versions carrying most of the volume. It is bought for heavy towing, fifth-wheel work and commercial duty. Tire shoppers land here because nearly every fitment is an LT-metric tire in load range E, priced and rated quite differently from a half-ton size.
Launched in 2001. Launched for the 2001 model year alongside the Silverado HD, the Sierra 2500HD brought the new 6.6-liter Duramax diesel and Allison five-speed automatic to GMC and replaced the old C/K 2500 heavy-duty trucks.

First generation HD (GMT800)
Shares the GMT800 cab with the light-duty Sierra but rides higher on eight-lug 16-inch wheels with wider fender flares and a heavier front bumper. GMC's red badge sits in a horizontal-bar grille. A 2007 Classic carries the old body alongside the new GMT900 truck.

Second generation HD
A new fully boxed frame, a much larger grille and a taller hood, with a 2015 facelift that brought stacked headlamps and a squarer nose. Denali trims get a chrome mesh grille and body-color trim. Seventeen- and 18-inch wheels standard, 20s on Denali.

2020-2024
Third generation HD (T1XX)
Much taller and squarer with a vast grille, a hood that sits above the tops of the tires and up to fifteen camera views for trailering. The AT4 off-road trim arrives on this truck with a factory lift and all-terrain tires. Eighteen-inch wheels on base and SLE, 20s on SLT, Denali and AT4.

What the press said
Reviews treat the Sierra HD as the Silverado HD with better trim, and the Duramax and Allison combination is the most consistently praised element. Testers rate the trailering camera system and the diesel exhaust brake highly, and the Denali interior from 2020 onward was judged a real improvement. The complaints are that the truck neither tows the most nor rides the best in its class, that it is awkward to park because of its size and hood height, and that Denali and Denali Ultimate pricing has climbed a long way. Empty ride quality on the stiffest suspension packages is regularly criticized.
GMC's heavy-duty trucks don't lead the class in any respect, but they'll still haul heavy loads with ease and grace.

Was it a success?
A profitable and steady seller in a segment led on volume by Ford, and GMC's share of it has grown as Denali took over the top of the range. Resale on Duramax crew cabs is strong and the Allison transmission is used as a selling point in used listings. Mechanically it is a Silverado HD, so the same history applies: injector problems on the earliest LB7 Duramax, heat issues on the LLY, and a good record from the LBZ onward. Budget properly for tires, because four load-range-E LT tires cost around double a half-ton set.
