About the Ford Ranger

The Ranger is Ford's mid-size pickup, sold in the US from 1983 to 2012 as a compact truck and again from 2019 as a larger global model. The current truck competes with the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado, while the older one was for years the best-selling compact pickup in America. Tire buyers land here because the two eras use completely different sizes, from a tall 235/75R15 on an old 4x4 to modern 17- and 18-inch fitments.

The compact Ranger was reviewed for most of its life as honest, cheap and increasingly outdated, and its poor 1998 frontal crash rating from the IIHS was widely reported. The 2019 revival drew praise for its torque, the ten-speed automatic and class-leading tow and payload ratings, and criticism for an interior that reviewers judged well below the Colorado and Tacoma in material quality, and for a ride that is firm when unladen. Off-road credibility improved sharply with the 2021 Tremor package and the later Raptor.

No matter which model you choose, the cabin features straight-forward controls, but lower-trim versions appear cheap and uninspired.

The compact Ranger sold over 340,000 units in the US in 1994 alone; the revived model peaked at 101,486 in 2020 and has run between 32,000 and 46,000 since the 2024 redesign changeover.

Was it a success?

The original Ranger was an enormous commercial success and then a neglected one, selling on price long after the design was obsolete. The revived truck sells well but has never matched the Tacoma. Resale on 4x4 crew cabs is strong; the older compact trucks are now cheap and valued mainly as work vehicles, with frame and bed rust the usual killer. Reliability on the 2019-on truck is acceptable, with early ten-speed transmission complaints and some coolant intrusion issues on the 2.3-liter EcoBoost.

Old and new Rangers have almost nothing in common at the tire shop. The compact trucks use tall 15- and 16-inch sizes, 205/75R15 and 225/75R15 on two-wheel-drive models and 235/75R15, 245/70R16 or 245/75R16 on 4x4s, with flotation sizes like 30x9.50R15 on early FX versions; many of these came as light-truck tires and load range C is worth keeping if the truck works. The 2019-on truck moves to 255/65R17 on XL and XLT trims, 265/65R17 on FX4 and Lariat models and 265/60R18 on 18-inch wheels, with OE rubber from Hankook Dynapro and General Grabber. Nothing on any Ranger is staggered and no version uses run-flats. Towing is rated to 7,500 pounds on the current truck, so a load index at or above the placard figure matters, and the FX4 and Tremor packages already come with a severe-service-rated all-terrain.
