The F-250 is the three-quarter-ton member of Ford's Super Duty line, a separate and much heavier truck than the F-150 despite the family resemblance. It runs eight-lug hubs, a solid front axle on 4x4 models and a frame built for fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing. Tire shoppers land here because almost everything the F-250 wears is an LT-metric or flotation size in load range E, which is a different shopping problem from a half-ton.

Super Duty reviews have followed the diesel engine more than anything else: the 7.3 is remembered fondly, the 6.0 and 6.4 badly, and the 6.7 Power Stroke has been consistently praised since 2011 for smoothness and for leading the class on torque and tow ratings. Reviewers also single out the payload and fifth-wheel figures, the trailer camera systems and the surprisingly quiet cabin of Lariat and above. Criticism goes to a stiff empty ride, prices on King Ranch and Platinum trims that top many luxury cars, and trailer-reverse assist systems that testers have found awkward in practice.

The Super Duty has led the US heavy-duty pickup segment for most of its life and the F-250 is the volume seller within it. Resale on 6.7 Power Stroke crew cabs is unusually strong for a working vehicle, while 6.0 and 6.4 diesel trucks from 2003-2010 carry a permanent discount because of head-gasket, EGR and injector problems. The 6.2 and 7.3 gasoline V8s are cheap to run and well regarded. Tires are the main running-cost surprise for new owners, because four load-range-E tires cost well over twice what a family car needs.

Tire options on the Ford F-250

Almost every F-250 fitment is an LT-metric tire in load range E with a 10-ply rating, because the front axle alone can carry over 5,000 pounds. Base work trucks ran LT235/85R16 in the early years and LT245/75R17 later, XLT and Lariat sit on LT275/70R18, and 20-inch trims use LT275/65R20. Nothing is staggered and there are no run-flats; OE fitments are usually Goodyear Wrangler, Michelin LTX or General Grabber, and the Tremor leaves the factory on a 35-inch all-terrain. Owners upsize heavily, with LT285/75R17, 35x12.50R18 and 37x12.50R20 all common, but every step up can cost payload capacity because flotation sizes often carry lower load ratings than the narrow LT tire they replace. If you pull a fifth wheel, check the tire's load rating against the sticker on the door jamb rather than assuming any load-range-E tire will do, and remember that dually owners need six matched tires rather than four.
