Buying tires at Amazon
Marketplace, selling tires since 1994. What tires cost there, what shipping and installation add, how returns work and what customers rate them.
Who owns it
Amazon.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN), a public company founded in 1994; the BBB profile records the business as started 1 July 1995 and lists about 1,300,000 employees. Tires are not a separate company or division but a slice of the Automotive category on Amazon.com, sold partly by Amazon itself and mostly by third-party sellers. The tire program is far younger than the company: installation through partner service chains started around 2017-2018, with Pep Boys expanding it nationally in November 2018, Sears Auto Center joining in August 2018 (that chain has since closed), and Monro completing a rollout to all of its 1,200-plus stores in 32 states in July 2020.
What you can buy there
Because most tire listings come from independent sellers rather than from Amazon, almost every brand with a US distributor turns up somewhere, from Michelin, Bridgestone and Goodyear down to obscure Chinese imports. Wheels, wheel-and-tire packages, trailer, ATV and lawn tires sit in the same category, and used or take-off tires appear as well. The depth is not curated: two listings for one size may come from a national distributor and from an unknown reseller, and Amazon does not vouch for fitment.
Shipping
Tires ship under Amazon's ordinary terms, which means free delivery for Prime members and on qualifying orders, with the delivery date set per seller. Buyers can take delivery at home or, where the seller supports it, send the tires to a participating installation shop; Monro called this the Ship-to-Store option when it opened the service at all of its stores in 32 states in July 2020. Alaska and Hawaii depend entirely on the individual seller, and some decline oversized items to those states.
Installation
Amazon operates no service bays. Fitting is done by partner chains that accept tires shipped to them: Pep Boys nationally since November 2018, Monro at more than 1,200 stores in 32 states since July 2020, and Sears Auto Center until that chain disappeared. Amazon publishes no current count of participating shops, and the price of mounting, balancing, valve stems, disposal and TPMS work is set by the shop rather than by Amazon. Road hazard coverage, where it exists, comes from the tire manufacturer or the installer, not from Amazon.
Returns and warranty
Amazon states that most items can be returned for refund or exchange within 30 days of delivery as long as they are in original or unused condition, and the help page tells buyers to check the product detail page for an item's return eligibility before ordering. That caveat matters for tires: third-party sellers set their own terms, and a mounted tire is no longer unused, so installed tires are routinely refused. Manufacturer treadwear and road hazard claims are handled by the tire maker or an authorized dealer, not by Amazon.
Where they sit on price
Amazon is often the lowest posted price on budget and mid-tier tires, and Prime shipping is included, but the listing price is not the delivered-and-fitted cost: mounting, balancing, valves and disposal are billed by whichever shop takes the job. Prices move with the seller, so the same size can change between listings within a day and a cheap listing can be gone by the next visit. No membership is required.
What it does well
- The widest choice of any single US source, because most sizes are listed by several independent sellers at the same time
- Frequently the cheapest posted price on budget and mid-tier tires, with Prime shipping included
- Familiar checkout with saved payment details, and a BBB profile accredited since 1996 carrying an A+ rating
- Tires can be routed to a partner installation shop instead of to the house, through chains such as Pep Boys and Monro
- The standard 30-day return window covers most tire listings, and Amazon handles the refund itself on orders it fulfills
Where it falls short
- No tire expertise and no fitment guarantee. Trustpilot reviewers describe ordering one size and getting another, including a 17-inch tire order filled with a 16-inch tire and 'Received totally wrong size. Was hassled to no end by CS'.
- Sets arrive split. Recurring Trustpilot complaints include 'ordered 4 tires got 2 of them the other 2 are in the system somewhere' and 'only 3 shipped, got 1 ture refunded', plus a buyer whose tracking said the tires had reached the installer when the shop did not have them.
- Seller-dependent quality with no visible production date: listings do not show the DOT week, so stock age cannot be judged before delivery, and a set may come from an unknown reseller whose return terms differ from Amazon's.
- Installation is somebody else's business. Amazon publishes no current installer count, the Sears Auto Center partner vanished with the chain, coordination failures fall between Amazon and the shop, and once tires are mounted they no longer meet the 'original or unused condition' return rule.

Questions people ask about Amazon
Is it safe to buy tires on Amazon?
Amazon itself is a long-established retailer with a BBB profile accredited since 1996 and an A+ rating, and its 30-day return policy covers most orders. The risk is not Amazon disappearing, it is the marketplace underneath it: many tire listings belong to third-party sellers whose stock age, packaging and return terms vary, and Amazon does not check that a tire fits the vehicle. Read the seller name and the return line on the product detail page before ordering, not after.
Who installs tires bought from Amazon?
Amazon has no service bays, so fitting is done by partner shops. Once tires have been mounted they no longer qualify, which is why installed tires are normally refused. How long does Amazon tire delivery take?
It depends on the seller rather than on one Amazon tire policy. Prime-eligible tires sold or fulfilled by Amazon usually arrive within a few days at no extra shipping cost, while tires drop-shipped by a third-party seller can take noticeably longer, and each listing shows its own estimate. Buyers frequently report a set of four arriving in separate shipments on different days, so it is safer not to book the fitting appointment until all four have landed.
